I know what you mean, Tom. I'm currently in the midst of a project transcribing my old laserdisc collection to DVD. Some I won't bother with, because I either don't care enough, or I care so much to want a digital DVD original instead of a transcription, but that still leaves several dozen to laboriously digitize, edit, and reburn to DVD. There's the difference: We can record these days, as well as consume prerecorded material. I would expect that many people will choose to buy the eventual HD recorders that come along and preserve their existing current-generation DVDs through transcription to newer media. We no longer have to go running back to the "studios" for new media every time they change formats. I'm sure it's killing Hollywood to think that the "friction" upon which they made money for so long is evaporating before their very eyes.

I admit to some satisfaction at beating the system this time around by transcribing my old media. It's always galled me that I purchase a license for the material--it says so right on the sleeve, "license for private performance"--yet they've always had the power to nullify my license simply by changing formats. Eff 'em, now I have a dual-layer DVD burner and a video capture card, I can preserve my investment in my licensed material.
