I lived for several years about ten miles south, in a different part of the Santa Cruz Mountains (yet everybody's heard the name: "Loma Prieta"). Utterly beautiful, and Big Basin has that profound cathedral quiet of a Sequouia grove (when not shattered by tourists). I've camped there a couple of times, too. Sounds like you've at least visited yourself.
Tom and I are presently about the same distance north of BB, maybe 20 miles as the crow flies, 40 as Highway 17 snakes up the mountain, but at different compass points to each side of north. I get up in that area every month or so to visit old friends, and it always does my soul good to escape the Valley hive. I often take the scenic route, an additional 20 miles or so along Hwy 9 and Skyline Boulevard (Hwy 35), which runs along the spine of the Peninsula mountain range and takes my by the turnoff to Big Basin. Been at least a decade since I've been in there, though. Actually living in the SC Mountains seemed naturally to reduce my need to play tourist there. Now that I'm living in exile I may again go camping there this spring.
