"Interestingly, not long ago we had Ba'at Yeor, author of the book Eurabia and frequent writer on the dhimmitude concept speak to a group of mid-level U.S. military officers.
The vast majority considered her to be a kook.
I'll leave it to zoners' individual biases to determine whether that observation says something good about the rationality of our officer corps, or is just proof that our civilizations' defeat is inevitable."
I would say that our officer corps is fairly rational.
I thought the story Tom linked to was somewhat interesting, but I wouldn't say it was clear assessment or reasonable prediction of the future.
But in general terms I agree that our civilization could fail and it if history is guide [which it is] it's highly likely. And even a very brief look at our educational system, causes one to wonder why it hasn't happenned already. Our bloated govt with it's high taxes and the excessive laws and regulations. Etc. Etc. Etc. All points to disaster over the horizon. BUT this isn't anything new, and more importantly there are other forces in play which prevent this from happenning.
Basic problem with the idea that Islam as any threat, and I mean any threat. Is that it is a very weak force which is NOT growing stronger. An analogy could be in radio one has a carrier wave and a signal. Islam might be part of the signal, but it's not the carrier wave.
Switching gears slightly, I will state the obvious, Islam did not become a great religion because of terrorism.
Terrorism could get loud enough to wake up America- it really hasn't done this yet. But also terrorism could be loud enough to wake up the muslims- since the signal is louder and closer this is a reasonable expectation. And not only that there is plenty of evidence that the "problem of terrorism" is waking up the muslims to this problem. Now, an awaken Muslim population is something that does have power & it can have this carrier wave and the signal. But the strength will be true Islam- something that is open to new ideas, something that believes in ideals which the West holds as ideals. In other words the Islam which was major element in dragging the West out of it's Dark ages, could re-awaken. But is this really a problem? This is not irrationality, rather it's rationality. It could change the world and any time one changes the world you are going to have conflicts of some sort of the other. If you are afraid of change then it's possible that this is something to be afraid of. BUT you are NOT going to drag this world out of darkness without Change- and a lot of it.
