I'm running for the airport so I'll be quick:
1. So protests were held "around the world". My point stands that the overwhelming majority -- like 90% majority -- of self-identified liberals supported the war, as did an equally high percentage of elected Democratic officials. You can't have it both ways -- either your "Left" means a fringe with wierd hairdos but little influence, or, it ain't so monolithic and pathologic as you always say.
2. The Iraq war never had an approval rating like Afghanistan, and in particular, was always opposed by a majority or at least near-majority of Democrats.
3. If Iraq had not happened and things in Afghanistan were going as well as they are now, with the same casualty count, support for Afghanistan would still be decent. By a nearly 3 to 1 margin (which means most Dems, too) Americans think that going into Afghanistan was the right thing to do (as of Jan 2006, at least, most recent poll I saw at a quick glance). I have no doubt some Hollywood types or professional protestors would focus on Afghanistan instead if Iraq weren't there, to relatively little avail.
