"My side is so morally superior to yours"

Robert, man, you have to admit that "My side is so morally superior to yours" has been the staple of Conservative rhetoric since the beginning of time, as other issues have come and gone. Inevitably, people who presume to claim the moral high ground are more vulnerable to charges of hypocrisy than the less censorious types.

I know that you're not prone to this character flaw, but you know that other Conservatives revel in passing judgment on others...well, mostly non-Conservatives, though when Conservatives turn on Conservatives, it's a piranha pool party. Bowser's addressing those people, and I can't disagree with him. You know damn well that it makes all the difference in the world that it was a Republican who got caught with his pants down around his keyboard; the thunderous peals of denunciation from the Right if it'd been a Democrat would be deafening.

The Extreme Right's outrage meter is usually pegged, but can you imagine how the needle would've wrapped around the peg if Monica Lewinsky had been 17 instead of 19 back then? Then, just for fun, try to imagine the reaction if she had been a he. Hard to picture, isn't it? I see angry villagers with torches and pitchforks storming the White House...but I don't think even that does justice to the deep currents of anger and hatred in the Extreme Right.

This isn't a symmetrical situation that can be dismissed with "oh, everybody does it". The strong thread of moral superiority in Conservative rhetoric makes Conservatives permanently vulnerable to charges of hypocrisy. People are just calling Conservatives on their own words and holding them to their self-proclaimed standards. Don't complain when the chickens come home to roost.
