If the Republicans had cleaned house themselves, there would be no question of timing. They could have controlled it themselves. No more crocodile tears about political stupidity, please.
If the discussion is going to be about dirty tricks during an election, how quickly we forget the Swift Boat People. Their allegations have yet to be even proven. Kerry wasn't the best candidate in the world, but he didn't deserve what they did to him based on his service record. Foley, at least, appears to have done what he is accused of doing.
Kerry didn't "out" Mary Cheney. She was already out. If the Vice President is going to attack homosexuals based on their sexual orientation, it's not too much to point out that he's attacking his own daughter. Or, possibly, that he's not, reserving favorite treatment on the basis of relationship, not OK for the second-highest law-enforcement office in the land. That, too, goes to character.
