There have been times when I have put my head down and groaned when someone on my side of an argument has made an intemperate or ill-informed remark, not only in the virtual world but in print and at public meetings as well. (In public, I groan very very softly.) Yet I don't usually stand up or write my disagreement because, on the whole, I find the opposition's positions less tolerable than the intemperance of my erstwhile ally.
It does tend to make the dialogue coarser in the long run when people don't speak up to moderate (and I use the word unofficially) the tone. On the other hand, when I get involved in exchanges like that, I find that I make very little headway in either direction, and usually wind up sounding more like what I was trying to head off in the first place. Yuck.
So I, too, am guilty. I'm in no position to be the first to cast a stone, at REB or anyone else.
