It really, really bothers me when people try to brush something like this off because it's inconvenient. "There's no excuse for Foley, but here's why we shouldn't pay any attention." Riiiight.
I'm listening to a bunch of adults blaming their own inattention, or the inattention of their leadership, on the opposition party. Puleese. The bandwagon I've jumped on is the one that's seeking to discredit that approach to responsibility.
I agree, there are more important things to worry about, such as the civil war we have had a hand in developing in Iraq, and the resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan. But this one is so obviously venal and stupid that it burns me up to witness the chameleon-like attempts to make it disappear, and it touches upon my clients besides.
