If the US were to withdraw, it would be a victory for all Iraqis opposed to the US occupation.
One thing the occupation has caused is Iraqi nationalism. The insurgents will join the nationalists and definitely not fight them.
In fact, the insurgents are willing to talk to the current government provided the US left Iraq (this I read in a IHT article I posted earlier).
If some factions were to go on with killing Iraqis (being Iraqis themselves), they'd be quickly confronted with its absurdity.
And why would a civil war expand? The common enemy, the US, would be gone!
If the Shi-ites were at the head, one way to appease the Sunnis would be to spare Saddam's life.
All this "if the US left Iraq, it would get worse" argument is nothing but war propaganda aimed at hiding the one obvious consequence: the humiliation of defeat.
