Serious question: How do they tell what the past tempature of Earth was from an Ice Core?

I can see where snowfall levels might be obvious from a snow-core> Also, CO2 concentrations should be possible to obtain from air bubbles inside of the ice core...But where do they get the tempature data from?

Snowfall does not correlate with tempature...So what other source is being used?
