Flame » in reply to R.L. That makes sense; however, is that truely indicative of "global" tempatures or just "polar region" tempatures?

Global...

As has been pointed out many times the polar ice core data has been compared with many other independant data- Such as glacial ice core data, from mountains at lower latitudes, tree ring data, and I believe some ocean sediment data.

As for a localized volcanic activity, that would be obvious in the ice core data as the cores also trap aerosols and ash- additionally, the volcanic CO2 has a different isotopic make up than anthropogenic sources- Anyone that trys to pin the rise in CO2 on volcanic activity is either uneducated on the issue, or is deliberately lying.

The science here is good- the researchers understand what can and cannot be read into icecore data. Question it if you want but MANY people have devoted their lives to getting it right, and many more people have critically examined their work.

one issue that is a problem is the further back you go, the coarser your time resolution is- another is exposure to sunlight can scew the chemistry... again these are issues that the researchers know about and take into account precisely because they no the science so well.
