Yeah, I was kidding too.
I agree with your ideas. Conservation makes sense in many , many ways.
Population control is a tough one, though, since developing countries have by far the biggest populations. China is working on it but there is so much momentum it's hard to stop, never mind reverse. I have a feeling that nature may step in on that one, though, in the form of H5N1 or something unexpected. Populations in nature are never unchecked for long.
It's tempting to think that a huge natural disaster - disease, asteroid, whatever - that literally decimated mankind would lead to a utopia with lots of resources, lots of space, insignificant pollution, etc. but that's about as realistic as the global warming deniers saying "Tra la tra la, when it happens I'll buy beachfront property on Hudsons Bay and the homeless in Chicago won't freeze in the winter."

- Serious question: How do they tell what the past tempature of Earth was from an Ice Core?
- It is impossible to tell anything about the earth at all...

- I still don't see why it's temperature dependent. (n/t)
- 'Heavy' water molecules will evaporate from the ocean at a different rate than light ones
- R.L. That makes sense; however, is that truely indicative of "global" tempatures or just "polar region" tempatures?
- A pretty good article at Wikipedia
- There are also small chemical differences in how differing isotopic water compositions react
- I knew that. I was just too dumb to think of it. (n/t)
