This whole scenario has been featured on a documentary on The Discovery Channel and absolutely blew me away. If you see it on again, I heartily recommend it. I think the evidence they've found in ice cores of dramatic shifts of climate within a span of a decade or so is a real indicator to the future we or our descendants face.
Not that I'm overly concerned. Most scenarios that deal with a shutting down of the global convection system involve plunging North America into a new ice age. I figure Phoenix then becomes much like Colorado, kind of a haven from the advancing ice. My property values have risen dramatically in the last few years. I can only imagine where they'll go when we become the residential destination for all those frozen refugees from the North.

- Serious question: How do they tell what the past tempature of Earth was from an Ice Core?
- It is impossible to tell anything about the earth at all...

- I still don't see why it's temperature dependent. (n/t)
- 'Heavy' water molecules will evaporate from the ocean at a different rate than light ones
- R.L. That makes sense; however, is that truely indicative of "global" tempatures or just "polar region" tempatures?
- A pretty good article at Wikipedia
- There are also small chemical differences in how differing isotopic water compositions react
- I knew that. I was just too dumb to think of it. (n/t)

- Thanks for the info.
