Guns in the old West

I pulled the 25% right out of my behind since I really have no idea of the real stats. Certainly very few women or children carried weapons and the percentage of able bodied men that carried may have been much lower than I supposed.

The main point is that personal security was not implied by the government. It seems that we have regressed to a point that the same conditions exist today and people do have a right to expect a higher level of security than it seems we have today.

In spite of the fact that we are still more likely to be struck by lightening than killed by a mass murderer, the answer "there is nothing we can do to prevent this" is not satisfactory.

You are spot on regarding the cost of illegal weapons. A 9mm semi-automatic pistol probably can't be bought legally for less than $500 but is available on the street for $100. I am not sure gun control laws will reduce illegal availability.

BTW, your mention of swords and pistols reminded me of a book, Gentlemen, Swords and Pistols. by Harnett T. Kane. It is a good read on dueling in America
