Indignation is not a good substitute for discussion.

Although it does seem to serve some people quite well.

My first thought when I heard this news story was "how could somebody like that have been stopped?" Since it was Virginia, I somehow automatically assumed that normal citizens would not have trouble carrying guns, but when I looked around for data, I found that shocking and terribly ironic story.

This issue goes way past Virginia Tech. It includes all of those who believe that by disarming good people, you can make them safer. It includes those who, after all this time, are still keeping airline pilots unarmed.

You hooted at me elsewhere for talking about young people carrying guns. When Jerry Pournelle was young, down South, school kids carried rifles to school and parked them by the door, in case there was something to plink for supper on the way home. My own grandfather's house had a .22 leaned by the door for varmint control. None of us touched it. We would have been whipped senseless if we had.

Out in rural Gold Country, I saw people on the street still carrying guns in old-style Western holsters. I wasn't worried about them suddenly going nuts and shooting me any more than I worry about the drivers of one of the hundreds of cars that pass me on the sidewalk every day suddenly deciding to hop the curb and mow down fifty pedestrians.
