First of all, you have no idea where I write to, and how often, including large newspapers. I won a Silver Pen Award from the San Jose Mercury News, which has published a lot of my stuff in the past, but in the vast majority of cases, particularly with nationally known newspapers, my letters vanish into the ether and are not published.
This is why the alternative media works, and why I like it. I spend a lot less time on the spike.
Second, "internal struggle" may mean someone is honestly torn about an issue, particularly if the information they are trying to analyze changes as time goes on, or is new and incomplete.
Unfortunately, in other cases it can mean someone who is justifying his or her inability to arrive at a conclusion, and take a stand. This is particularly obvious with issues where the basic facts haven't changed for years.
It can also mean that the person has actually arrived at a rational conclusion, but out of emotion or sheer unwillingness to change his or her views, the person uses the term to justify dithering on it forever.
