As long as it was just about WMDs, I was ready to kick ass and take names later. We just kept on coming up with new reasons long after the WMDs turned out to be a non-issue.
I believed Colin Powell and the UN presentation, all the nifty radio intercepts and remote sensing. Even being mistaken about that was a tragic, but honest mistake I could have forgiven if only it had been acknowledged. And if it then hadn't been covered up, and then obscured with all the excuses and substitutions. And then came the sneering and the dismissal and the insults and the arrogance. Even now, the rationalizations for this debacle just keep on coming, they don't stop.
The ONLY excuse one nation has to invade another is if the second nation is actively preparing aggression against the first. I might be willing to add sheltering a proven aggressor force, like Al-Quaeda to those excuses. But that's not WHY we invaded Iraq, it's what we told the world was the reason for invading Iraq.
The real reason was to force a change in the geopolitical balance of the region to our favor. And for secure access to their oil (no, I don't believe we actually planned to steal it). Invading other countries for their resources and to alter geopolitical balances is the traditional reason for aggression. In Vietnam we could fool ourself into thinking it was about fighting Communism. This was different. Now we're just like everybody else.
