I never felt scared during the hospitalization, Jody...Certainly annoyed and also fatalist.
And now, I'm getting the bill (not in one, but in several steps which is preventing me from sending the whole thing to my employer to be reimbursed for the groups hospitalization insurance).
There could be also other factors: I turned 50, my father's health is deteriorating (he's 80 with Parkinson's desease) and my brother just became father.
And also magazines I've been reading pointing to relative perceptions of humans.
I don't see anything depressing in what those who don't believe in a religion, perceive of their existence. If it's just what we can perceive (facts) rather than what we believe in (faith), it doesn't change our mood.
An example: I saw a UFO when I was 11...Didn't know what it was, couldn't explain it...but it never bothered me and I could keep an open mind not choosing what to believe what it was. OTOH, others might become bery interested, read lots of books (preferably those enhancing their belief) and have a lot of difficulty when faced with the opposite point of view. I even see this about religious faith at HZ.
And I"m reading an article by Richard Dawkins in Focus.
Maybe, I'll post about it (and get some heated reactions :-)
