Should I feel left out?

Or lucky?

Not to say that I ignore modern notions of healthy eating, tending more to fish than either beef or fowl (and the sole law of kashrut I follow: no pork), but I do like a nice hunk of medium-rare moo every so often. Granted, my vegetable intake often comes in liquid form (house-brand versions of V8), but so what if they sometimes don't crunch?

I don't use sweetener of any kind, natural or not. There's not a grain of sugar in my place. Rarely will I drink a soda (ale's another matter...), rarer still have dessert while out to dinner. Last time I donated blood, in August, they gave out coupons for a free pint of ice cream; I haven't redeemed mine yet. I don't add salt while I'm cooking, either. That's for the table, to one's own taste, not for the pot.

I've learned to alter my cooking when Jody's visiting, skipping the carbs -- for instance, fresh-made guacamole is just as tasty rolled up in romaine leaves as it is on tortilla chips -- but the other five nights of the week, I'm still a grain junkie.

'Struth, I smoke. But I've yet to suffer from shortness of breath, neither while riding my bike nor on the elliptical machine. It's not like I was particularly athletic at any time in my life, or about to enter a marathon...
My BMI is 24.5, I exercise once a week (machines in the apartments' common area), and I've gradually reduced from a 32 to a 31 waist. I haven't had a physical exam in 7 or 8 years, and don't intend to have one, so don't start in.

All told, I feel better now than I recall ever having felt. Not bad for 56...
