Not sure if you realize how much your post reveals about the cultural situation in the West.
Criticism is, as you say, a vital part of a free nation, but the same as with people, endless criticism while remaining silent about the good things at some point becomes counterproductive.
I'd like to think we have a little room left for open, blatant public pride in our own nation without it being "vaguely but distinctly un-American" or "tacky." I like flags, small-town Fourth of July parades, and now and then a movie that's allowed to show that America has the right to feel something besides shame and endless self-criticism. God knows they come along rarely enough. I think a healthy culture needs pats on the back now and then as much as it needs criticism.
Like I've said elsewhere, sure as hell the people of China don't get up in the morning and wonder if they deserve to be on the top of the heap.
