As Tom recently reminded us in trying to stir up resentment against Obama's remarks about small towns, the term "flyover people" is a key component in RightWing culture war rhetoric. It tries to invert reality by portraying Democrats as unconcerned about the plight of the "common man", and that there's a "Liberal elite" while there's no such thing as a "wealthy elite". As if CEOs spare much thought for the people below as they fly cross-country in their corporate jets.
It's sad, and more than a little destructive, that the Right has managed to convince a lot of people that it's somehow the Democrats responsible for their plight, and to ignore who is moving production overseas and steadily hammering down our standard of living. The GOP is simply laying down a smoke screen to cover the betrayal by their once-and-forever core constituency, big business.
Focus on what they do, not what they say.
