C'mon, you know how it works. The most recent example was the GOP running a smear ad in North Carolina, and McCain virtuously pretending to ask them to stop. It's all about deniability.
I never get tired of hearing Republican pundits these days casually using the word "swiftboating" to describe a smear campaign based on lies. We all knew the score in 2004, and even Republicans are admitting the true nature of the Swift Boat Veterans for "Truth". There was never any doubt that 2008 would bring a reprise of Republican swiftboating, this time based on the general theme of "He's black! He's Muslim! He's black!"; only the details remained to be resolved.
So far we've had a good old time dredging up posts from early 2003 to compare positions on Iraq, then and now. How about we search the messages from 2004 to read once again as RightWingers stridently defend Swift Boat Veterans for "Truth"? Anyone want to try to square the circle and explain how Republicans have come to adopt the term "swiftboating" to refer to smear campaigns?
