You have no idea how frustrating it is to hear this from you.
Just try working for a non-profit organization that gets most of its money from donations. I dare you. You'll be underpaid, overworked, and you'll tear out what's left of your hair on a bad day.
I work in this environment every day. Do you know how difficult it is to wring money out of people, even for a worthy cause? "I go to the book store, so I don't need the library." This they say to me while they are in the library, asking me for my expertise and my time. This they say while they argue with me about paying a $1.00 fine for bringing back their DVD late. Books for children who can't afford them? Who cares about that?
We will all care, when these children are the adults who are taking care of us in our old age. We are all in this together.
We used to give "voluntarily". It was called "tithing", a kind of flat tax, 10% of all income from everyone with no deductions, and it was enforced when the churches held political power. Nobody got to vote on the topic, either. Please, don't go all nostalgic for a fictional past.
