I am deeply troubled by a lot of what I see around me, in real life, in the newslife (part real, very filtered) and in the virtual world. Much of it is due to either the inability or the unwillingness of people to see others as they truly are, instead of as the Other. God knows it's hard enough for me to do some days, and I've devoted a lot of my life to the effort. Then I have to just go somewhere, take a breath and remember my grandparents.
I've never thought you were a bad or stupid or [fill in your own pejorative here] man, nor do I think that you're insincere or thoughtless in your beliefs. I wish you wouldn't throw words like "thief" around. They have meanings. They embed themselves like darts in the conversation, causing pain, irritation and distraction. On the other hand, I know you've suffered your share of slings and arrows too.
Yes, your work in replies to me has made a difference, even when I don't agree with you, because I always come away with an insight. You sometimes point me at a new web resource that I can use too, which is like gold to me. From time to time, you have contributed to me changing my mind about something, and sometimes I even have said so publicly here, although it's a dangerous thing to do, what with all the crowing and all.
It's a difficult time for us all right now. I would like to see people try to forge some common vision of what the future, their country, their world, their fellow humans mean to them, but if we all stopped arguing the Zone would cease to exist. If we ever came to a concensus on a large issue, I wonder if it would not be heralded as a Sign of the End Times. ;)
As far as my being unique, you're right. I don't see it. Whenever I visit here, I feel lucky to be considered average in such intelligent company.
