You can add SDAI and Lee to that as well (forgive me if I forget anyone).
>"someone is undeserving of a shot at the American Dream merely because they're poor, so they must be undeserving independent of their economic condition. Therefore, they must be venal in some way. Why else would they not deserve a little stability, and an opportunity to improve themselves? "
Unfortunately, this seems to be conservative thinking IN GENERAL. Like a spoiled kid, they refuse to "share". Is it stinginess? Does it have something to do with upbringing? Genetics?
We don't see it displayed that well in the animal kingdom...depends on the SPECIES. Do they lack compassion? Is it a form of elitism?
Apparently a PBS special last night addressed the different tiers of society and their stress levels and how the rich prey upon the poor. To some degree, this form of elistism IS isolationism, and as society crumbles beneath their feet, they TOO, may have to beg and barter for the necessities of life in the future (one can only hope, eh?)

Tom thinks that " nurturing the potential of the poor with public money is a bad use of the money."
