Good luck getting politicians to go with it, though. A consumption tax is anonymous and universal, requiring little paperwork (at least by the buyers).
The ability of politicians to use the current tax system to reward and punish with taxes and tax breaks is one of the greatest powers they have, and they aren't going to give it up lightly.
