Deus ex machina (all spoilers all the time)

We wuz robbed. Four years of waiting to find out the "truth", and it turns out "somebody's been pulling our strings".

Starbuck realizes she's an angel and her work here is done...and evaporates.

Baltar's incubus and Caprica Six's succubus (or is it vice-versa) reveal themselves as angels, and stroll off into TomorrowLand. (The moment when both meat people realize they're seeing the other's doppelganger is cute, though.)

All Along the Watchtower was just a mcguffin, and all the slow revelation of the tune and the sprinkling of lyrics in the dialog and Kara's piano lessons were all building up to...nothing. The foreshadowing was so thick that I was positive that the tune was integral to the final denouement. But it was just a sound effect.

Lots of minor nits to pick, like the million-lightyear upgrade to the FTL engines. It's as if the whole thing suddenly lost structural integrity and nothing fit together any more.

What it all amounts to is that the Colonial civilization was beaten by the Cylons. The native humans had the same DNA and so the newcomers contributed nothing by going native. All they had of value was their culture, and they decided voluntarily to abandon it. They committed suicide. What a downer.

The final twist broke the entire story arc (or circle, in this case), I think. The 150,000 year gap precludes any aspect of their culture surviving into the present day, and so, somehow, the Colonials didn't give us our Greek pantheon and our language and our alphabet, and Bob Dylan penned All Along the Watchtower entirely coincidentally. I'm afraid that "God did it" just doesn't work for me.

Funny how we all waited until today to post. I think we're all naturally reluctant to make negative comments about something most of us had been very positive about, as if the previous enthusiasm seems all of a sudden like a mistake in judgment. But I guess I shouldn't let a flawed finale retroactively ruin the enjoyment I got from the series. It really was great, overall, and for once "reimagining" wasn't just a cynical way of saying "trashy remake".
