Characters or Science: Why not both?

In the interview with Ronald Moore, he claims he wanted to focus on characterization over being scientifically accurate. Of course having interesting and believable characters are important to any story – I know I have abandoned quite a few plots that had characters who were either made of cardboard and clichés or were just too unpleasant or boring to even build up a dislike for -- but why does having one mean downplaying or ignoring the other elements of the story and fictional world they have created? Even fictional worlds have to have a foundation in some kind of reality to be believable to the audience.

Don’t these Hollywood types realize that most of the people who watch science fiction, even some of the new mainstream crowd they were courting with realistically gritty BSG, also know enough actual science to realize when they are being shown nonsense?

Hospital dramas clearly do their homework when it comes to medicine, so why can’t they take their vast resources and money to hire a grad student in physics or astronomy for a few days to go over the script and make sure the science has some realism to it as well?

Because they don’t really care and they did badly in science and math at school, I know. And they think the viewers are ignorant, too.

Star Wars is essentially a fantasy that tries to hide this fact by having spaceships, but it is far more fairy dust than science fiction. BSG now belongs in that same category, even if the characters seem more real and swear a lot. Gods and angels guided their lives and whisked them away to an ideal place where they all think they can just dump their old lives and carry on anew. A fantasy, like I said.

When will people ever get over this need for a Mommy and Daddy in the Sky to come and rescue them, or the delusion that advanced beings from another realm are watching over us every second and have nothing better to do than get wrapped up in every minute detail of our lives.

I dunno, maybe they do have a lot of time on their hands so we are some form of entertainment/surrogate children for them. But I see a lot of other evidence that in gritty reality we’re on our own and the only beings who will rescue us are us. Advanced beings are either too remote in space and evolution from us to know or care we exist. If they exist at all.

The ending of BSG was a big disappointment for me after all we went through for it. The writers and producers made it pretty clear that they were making things up as they went along and they copped out for the standard happy ending.

We will see how The Plan holds up. I already have the feeling that Caprica will be a soap opera with robots and spaceships thrown in to pretend it is still science fiction.
