When the initial nuclear attack came, Number 6 had Baltar hide behind
her, so that he survived the blast and she was later resurrected.
Maybe that was the whole point of the series, that we humans just
aren't smart enough to break the cycle of destruction we keep finding
ourselves in and that someone or something else will come along and
replace us. That our main purpose was to create the superior Cylons
or their equivalents and then just fade into oblivion, either by being
destroyed or going back to the stone age.
The "angels" did give a ray of hope at the end with their comments
while walking around modern day NYC, but it does seem like they and
we went through four years of their epic struggle to survive, only to
watch them throw all their culture and technology away to live what
they presumed would be an idyllic existence.
