the idea was to allow younger citizens an option to diversify a tiny part of their contribution into an account they own themselves and can be passed to heirs. The ups and downs of the stock settle into a pretty steady growth measured over decades. It's a real wakeup call to figure out what kind of cash someone my age would be sitting on if I had been putting all of my Social Security contributions over the past forty years into the stock market. Even now.
As far as health care, there were health savings accounts, insurance company regulation reform, and other ideas brought up.
I think the problem is that any non-socialist ideas in these areas are simply dismissed out of hand by Democratic politicians, and treated just as though no ideas at all were proposed.
