As to your unfunny part, I agree that debt is a horrid thing. But I think a 10-year depression would be overwhelmingly worse. On one of the Sunday shows, Newt Gingrich (wish I had a link to video for you - sorry) sounded like he got it. He said that unemployment was going to get a lot worse before it got better. And that we needed more stimulus than we currently have on the books. His preference was for tax cuts over government spending. But there was no question but that he was saying we needed more government debt to get out of the mess.
