Here's a little brochure on British private health insurance. This seems to be a supplement to NHS, not a private replacement choice. Something like 10 to 15 percent of British people have such insurance.
Things not normally covered, according to this brochure:
• Going to a general practitioner (GP)
• Going to Accident and Emergency
• Drug abuse
• HIV/AIDS
• Normal pregnancy
• Gender reassignment (sex change)
• Mobility aids, such as wheelchairs
• Organ transplant
• Injuries you get from dangerous hobbies (often called hazardous pursuits)
• Conditions you had before taking out the insurance (commonly known as
pre-existing conditions – see section 4)
• Dental services
• Outpatient drugs and dressings
• Deliberately self-inflicted injuries
• Infertility
• Cosmetic treatment
• Experimental or unproven treatment or drugs
• Kidney dialysis
• War risks
As it looks now, nobody is going to take over my healthcare because the Democrats got nailed in the act, like they did in 1992. And it's my "fellow Americans" doing this. I suppose we have to relearn this stuff every decade or so.
