Then we'll just have to catch more fish. Too much of a doctor's education is not medical related. Shorten the time it takes to become one. More doctors for less money.

Have you been paying attention? Currently the public plan will only be one slice of our healthcare system. The rest will keep their insurance and people will be required to buy coverage whether public or private. Some of those getting their care for free will continue to do so and others will start paying for it.
Your "per person" example is inaccurate be cause most healthcare $$$ are used in treating a fraction of the population.
