Of course government has a legitimate function. But even you have to see that the definition of "legitimate function" has been grossly expanded in recent times. At this point, there seems to be absolutely nothing that the Federal government considers outside its jurisdiction, which is a gross violation both of the Federal government's original function, and a violation of Federalism in general.
You might want to do more research on Jefferson.
