You should inspect your computer for uninvited software. I haven't heard of any normal mail service that does that to its customers, but it's possible some internal malware is rifling your e-mail files and shipping information off to ad companies. I'm speculating - hopefully, some of our resident software wizards will have more knowledge of this.
Of course, legitimate websites that use advertising widgets (many, many of them) will sometimes deliver ads based on your activity on that site. Certainly Amazon hawks books based on what you search for or purchase.
