DC-X design lacks abort modes, always has, always will. The "flights" you mention were flights of a very small test model, and those flights taken simply off the pad and then back on to it - sometimes.

The only reason that the $1 billion spent so far on the RLV has been wasted is because development of the RLV has been stopped -
