And it's about time, too. ;)
Our lives would all have been simpler if the three guys actually had been bombers. I expect more information to come out of this in the near future, and we can judge this incident more accurately. Right now, we're just hearing CNN and the three men--and of course their inevitable lawyers--talking. I would really like to hear the cops' side of this.
Again, the line between security and freedom is a fuzzy one, and it moves around like a snake. I don't have any easy answers as to where that line is either.
Is an oppressive society, a la old Singapore, worth being able to go out at night without worry and walk clean streets? In the time of Khubla Khan, it was said that a virgin carrying a bag of gold could walk from one end of the Mongol Empire to the other in perfect safety. Is it worth living under a Khan for that kind of security?
Is a libertarian, free society worth the price of living more dangerously, of not having a "safety net" if things go wrong, and of maybe losing some lives and buildings to terrorists now and then?
The real answer is probably somewhere in between, although as I've said before, I tend to lean toward the "dangerous freedom" side.
