I think both sides did the wrong thing to aggrivate the situation. Maybe because of my political leanings, I tend to come down a little harder on the three "Suspects".

But I have a feeling that the police didn't explain to them the gravity of the situation until it had already spiraled out of control. So a joke became a blame festival, which became a breaking news fiasco.
