There is a difference in our current society on how Right and Left extremism is perceived. Even accepting the canard that National Socialism is somehow "extreme Right," you will notice that professed Nazis are not currently teaching or occupying positions of authority on college campuses, newspaper staffs, artistic organizations, and the media. Avowed Marxists are.
When Marxists are booted off college campuses covered with tar and feathers the way any Nazi would (rightfully) be, I'll be a much happier camper.
And it was not a straw man. If you think collectivism can't eventually take total control of even a free nation, you're naive. A lot of the collectivist crap we routinely live with now would have horrified the Founding Fathers. Heck, it would have probably horrified our great-grandfathers.
We pay taxes without complaint that European serfs would not have tolerated (they typically paid about 25 percent of their produce to their lords). The Revolutionary patriots threw tea into the harbor for a tax of two pence to the pound. The original income tax form of 1913 is reproduced here. Please note those tax rates, which probably sounded pretty reasonable to those poor, stupid boobs who voted this in. Keep in mind the income levels in 1913. It only took a few years for the rest of the camel to get into the tent. By 1917 the top rate had ballooned from 7 percent to 67 percent.
