I know you are referring to military applications.
But since you phrased the question so broadly, we ought to remember the work of the World Health Organization and UNICEF.
Smallpox has been eradicated except in the laboratory.
Polio has been eradicated in the Western Hemisphere, and is on its way out in the rest of the world.
The immunization rate of young children against early childhood diseases has approached 80% worldwide because of initiatives by WHO and UNICEF.
The UN is also among the leading organizations in removing abandoned land mines from nations including Cambodia, Angola, Afghanistan and many others.
It's not much as a military organization, but as a humanitarian organization with broad reach and no religious component, I wouldn't kiss the UN off just yet.
