re: Both ways

A predator nation doesn't have to be economically viable to be a threat. You don't have to be economically successful just to destroy. How many productive commercial industries did Attila have?

The U.S.S.R. spend decades sucking up Western technology and know-how, legally and otherwise, to build its infrastructure, largely military. Among many examples is the sad one of the Buran spaceplane, a carbon-copy of the Space Shuttle, with the exception of its propulsion system.

And obviously, it means nothing to you that Soviet citizens lived in widespread poverty to keep the military machine running as long as it did. The near-unilateral American disarmament that the Left demanded through all of Reagan's administration would have made it possible for the Soviets to keep the ball rolling for years longer.

I've accepted that Reagan is going to be stricken from the historical record of the fall of the Soviet empire for the crime of...well...being Reagan. If Iraq in twenty years turns out as a viable and prosperous democracy, you can bet your ass that Brahimi will be accepting his Nobel Prize, and it's going to be "George who?"
