The Soviets copied the Soyuz and Progress from the US?

Tell me about that. (I know, stand back 8 miles and the Soyuz looks like an Appolo capsule. They must have stolen the shape.)

And the lifting body approach to the Shuttle wouldn't lead most designs to be similar?

And the Soviets didn't design some of the best fighters the world has seen? (The USSR designed planes for battle, not air shows. Landing on old roads, not 10,000 foot concrete strips, burning perfume if they had to.)

How about the AK-47? Know anyone who would prefer an M-16 in a firefight? (Except for the distinctive sound. Fire an AK-47 around people with M-16s, and you're liable to get shot at.)

One of the things forgotten is that much of the European portion of the Soviet Union was DESTROYED by WWII, as well as 20 million citizens killed.

If the US had lost 20 million folk, and had the industrial base destroyed, you would have found a different situation, too.

The Soviets basically won WWII, albeit with some American equipment. And said equipment wasn't occupied with American soldiers, thereby saving American lives.

And their country suffered horribly.
