The Brits and Frogs declared war on Germany to help Poland, although they knew Poland was beyond help. They also declared war knowing full well they were nowhere near ready to fight a war. In short, it was simple stupidity.

What's really sad was the fact that Germany's military was considerably smaller and weaker than those of Britain and France, yet the Allies still couldn't win. Which is why I guess they came screaming to the US shortly afterward asking us to come and fight their war for them. Germany never asked anyone else to do that.
