Does every business make money? Of course not. Did those movies lose money? Yes.
If they try to peddle something the public doesn't want, they'll lose time, money and effort.
Called capitalism.
Free enterprise.
Not every shot hits a bullseye, or even the target. That's a chance they take. With their money. If no one goes to see their movies, then they lose. If it's what the public wants, they'll make money.
If the message of the movie is not to conservatives liking, you would think they'd be satisfied to watch it lose money.
But they will probably try to censor it somehow. Boycotts, etc. Rather than let the free enterprise system they so publically tout work it's magic.

- "Then there's the media, which has dedicated itself to a Kerry victory." should be "Then there's the media, which have dedicated themselves to a Kerry victory."
