You're right that insulted is the right word. I'm certainly very secure in my lack of religious beliefs so you've got a great point that I have nothing to be insulted about. I think what bothered me the most was that it brought the real wacked out fundamentalists out of the woodwork. I go into an atheist chat room and we often get "fundie" attacks. As soon as that movie came out they seemed empowered and the attacks became much more frequent and viscious. Fundamentalism at its most fervent is a disturbing thing to see especially when it's propelled by blood lust.
Gibson is an immensely popular actor and social icon and sometimes I don't trust the average American intellect to be able to distinguish between the man and the superstar. A prime example is the Gropenator in California or just the simple fact that the person running for office with the most signs generally wins due to name recognition. Americans seem smug that we're immune from what happened in Nazi Germany to average people when a highly charismatic individual sucked them into some very bizarre ideas about life. Had the Passion been Mel's first movie my guess is it would've died a quick death. Instead it was Lethal Weapon and Braveheart that gave the idiot any credibility to even get noticed. That insults us all.

- "Then there's the media, which has dedicated itself to a Kerry victory." should be "Then there's the media, which have dedicated themselves to a Kerry victory."
