Navy shipboard duty definitely has it's hazards, be it in peacetime or war. Still, unless you're talking about Navy Corpsmen, SEALS, or combat aircrew (mostly pilots), those hazards are much less than faced by the infantry and other combat arms fields in the Army or Marines. A similar situation existed in the Air Force.
Ask a lot of Vietnam era Navy vets about why they went into the Navy instead of the Army or Marines and see what answers you get. A lot of guys with low draft lottery numbers chose to enlist in the Navy or Air Force to avoid having to go into the rice paddies. During the Vietnam draft era, the Navy and Air Force often had long wait lists to get in. That's a historical fact.
If you never were in the military or never studied military history, it's easy to understand your ignorance on the subjects. That's perfectly normal. As Will Rogers said long ago, "Everyone is ignorant, only on different subjects." Ignorance can be cured if one is willing to make the effort.

- "Then there's the media, which has dedicated itself to a Kerry victory." should be "Then there's the media, which have dedicated themselves to a Kerry victory."
