So, am I the only one who wonders why some people scream and leap for blood when this comes up?
I find communism and Nazism equally monstrous, but the behavior of those in Europe and those in academia don't reflect this view.
I can understand why some would want to evade this issue. The modern Left, although only socialist in parts now, was born in the cradle of the U.S. communist movement decades ago. It can't be something some of them want to be reminded of.
But to get that hostile over it? I'm just curious what button I pushed, that's all.
I've been following the Churchill controversy. I haven't posted on it here, since the man is irrelevant, and an isolated flake, even among the leftists. But there is currently argument over whether he should lose his academic position for his views, and issues of free speech have been raised.
But if he had professed a belief, for example, that blacks were inherently inferior, and should be treated as such, he would have been canned on the spot, and free speech issues would never have come into it.
Obviously, there is no real philosophical consistency here. Of the two major totalitarian horrors that have been inflicted on the world in this century, only one is treated with the abhorrence they both deserve. The other is not only tolerated, but actually lauded in some places, including places where our children go to learn.
Until that changes, I'm going to keep pointing it out.

- Oh come on ..
- The point is to condemn all those who commit genocide
- of course, Larry - that's exactly what I've been saying all along. The Nazis are just the standard bearers for genocide, but not the only ones. I have said this over and over again.
