Keep your pop-psychology personality evaluations to yourself.
Well, Daniel, that I cannot do. Although I'm not using my moderator handle, I confess that I am thinking like a moderator on this subject, and "pop-psychology personality evaluations" are part of my job.
You've reminded me that I've been insufficiently sensitive to the feelings of others on this thread, and particularly yours. For that I do apologize.
It's not just moderators who play different roles at different times on the Zone. RL's original post didn't just summon Lee, it summoned a specific Lee, Lee-the-Nazi-sympathizer. That's a very offensive Lee, but I'm mindful of the fact that the circumstances amount to a "command performance"--the HabitableZone specifically asked Lee to perform the very role that you and many others find so offensive.
What we've done to Lee is define a fixed role for him to play, and pretty much made his participation here conditional on his playing it. We summon him by raising topics such as RL's, and when he's here we look for signs of that stuff in posts and when we find it we bring it out and develop it into a squabble. It has to mean something that Lee reports for duty and plays his role, even though, as here, there are unmistakable signs that he'd rather talk about something else. It may be that he's demonstrating more loyalty to the HabitableZone than we've returned to him. How can I censure him for doing as we asked?
To the degree that the Zone itself has committed an offense, against you and in entirely different sense against Lee, I'm obligated to try and fix it.
It seems to me that a win-win is to find a mode of participation for Lee that does not bring up all the old wounds and grievances. That keeps him out of your face and everybody else's face. Good for you, good for Lee, good for the HabitableZone.
Please be patient with me, Daniel. I'm trying to make things better.
