Listen to Tom

Talk to some farmers. Talk to some animal breeders. Making something as complex as an organism supposes we will be able to predict the conditions in which it functions and will function. We have not yet perfected the crystal ball.

Corn bred for particular desireable traits needs to be coddled, protected and treated. Even flowers bred for color and size sacrifice resistance to pests and the great blessing of flowers, fragrance.

If you speak of using genetic manipulation in the limited sense of treatment for genetic disorders in humans, that's great. As the masters of trivia, our species can fiddle around the edges with amazing results, and unintended consequences. (Not all of these are good, but let that go for now.) To design a human being is beyond our ability. We will have to understand ourselves perfectly. That takes more genius than we have.
