Underinformed fantasy?

I think you've got it backwards. I read books written by the foremost thinkers and researchers in the field of genetics and you quote from sci-fi writers of decades past. How about you put down the ludditic rants of Shelley, and Huxley and pick up some real books on the subject. DNA : The Secret of Life by James Watson, Remaking Eden: Cloning and Beyond in a Brave New World by Lee Silver, and Redesigning Humans: Our Inevitable Genetic Future by Gregory Stock are a few good ones to start with.

As for getting the approval of John Q Public, aren't you one of the people on this board that continuously slam the American public for their misunderstanding of stem cell research and lack of basic scientific understanding of evolution? The work being done in the field of genetics is far too complicated to be left up to the average joe, or the idiots running our government. And while the debate in Washington will continue to drag on for the foreseeable future, biotech advances at a rapid clip. We will have intelligently designed people long before we have useful nano robots. Germline engineering is coming.
